May Day! Today is what’s known in Gaelic as Beltaine. You
probably know it as the day you danced around the Maypole with
brightly colored ribbons when you were a kid. The Maypole is a
Germanic symbol of fertility and the ancient Druids used the fires
of Beltaine for protection and purification of livestock and
humans. It is also traditionally viewed as a celebration of the
beginning of the summer growing season. So, plant some flowers, tie
some ribbons around a Maypole and dance around the bonfire and
celebrate Mother Nature!
